Meet Nigeria’s Youngest Female To Pilot Plane Cross Country

Fifteen year old Kimberly Anyadike flew from one end of America to the other, which is known as cross country flight in aviation parlance, thus becoming the youngest African American female pilot to complete the journey.
Kimberly, whose parents are Nigerians broke the U.S. record when she flew a single-engine Cessna cross-country from her hometown in California to Newport Virginia, which took 13 days.

She learned to fly at age of 12 through the Compton-based Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum, which offers aviation lessons in an after-school program for disadvantaged youths, P.M News reports.

Robert Petgrave, the museum’s founder said: “I told her it was going to be a daunting task, but she just said, ‘Put it on. I got big shoulders.’”

Kimberly said: “They left such a great legacy, I had big shoes to fill. All they wanted to do was to be patriots for this country. They were told no, that they were silly, that they didn’t have cognitive development to fly planes. They didn’t listen. They just did what they wanted to do.”

The fifteen year old futher said she just wanted to inspire other children to believe in themselves.

At least 50 Tuskeegee Airmen autographed her plane during the journey.

Flood Wreaks Havoc In Kaduna

Floods overwhelmed several communities in Kaduna yesterday, August 7, killing two people and destroying properties, the State’s Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirms.

Bodies of flood victims were found in Kachia communities, Kachia LGA of the state, according to SEMA.

Leadership reports that Rafin Guza in Kawo, Nasarawa, Kabala, Abubakar Kigo Road, Barnawa and other communities along the River Kaduna were all waterlogged, and the flood destroyed crops and many houses.

The agency’s executive secretary, Ezekiel Baba-Karik, urged the residents of the state to always follow building plans and advice from experts when erecting their buildings. He also condoled with the families of the flood victims.


“Two persons died as a result of the flood in Kachia. Several houses and crops were also destroyed by the flood in many parts of Kaduna State. The government of Kaduna State is saddened by the incident but we are also doing our best to assuage the sufferings of the people. We sympathise with families that lost their loved ones including Alhaji Sani Abubakar who lost a son.

“We are calling on the good people of Kaduna State to make sure they follow building plans so as to avert future flood occurrences. As the rainy season intensifies, we are calling on the good people of Kaduna State to make sure their gutters are cleared,” Baba-Karik said.

The SEMA boss also advised that there was the need to reactivate local emergency management committees (LEMCs), for quick response to emergencies in their communities, adding that the vice chairmen of the local government and the education secretaries will oversee that.


The Kachia LGA chairman, Abel Daniel said he was away in Zaria when the flooding occurred but had to rush down to see things for himself.

“I appreciate SEMA because this incident happened but immediately they were at the scene here. No one is praying for disaster to happen but with your experience, and as the Executive Secretary of SEMA, I know that you will take disaster management in Kaduna State to a greater height. We have to invite others in the council to take you round the science and for you to condole the families that lost their love ones,” the chairman said.

Two days ago, Anambra State Emergency Management Authority (ASEMA) also warned that about 10 local government areas in the state are likely to be troubled with flooding this year.

SHEKAU MISSING FROM B/HARAM VIDEO AGAIN

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau is conspicuously missing from a new video released by the group yesterday, Daily Trust reports.
The eight-minute video clip showed scenes of attacks by the sect, the beheading of a policeman and munitions allegedly seized from Nigerian soldiers.
This is the second time Shekau has failed to appear in the group’s video. In June this year the group released a video without Shekau, which fueled speculation that he might have been killed. His last known outing was in March this year when the group released an audio clip.
In the latest video, a man in brown attire and black turban said their fighters are still in the territories they earlier held, asking their followers not to despair. The man spoke in Hausa while another member of the sect stood behind him displaying the group’s flag.

Man arraigned for forging documents

The Edo State Police Command has arraigned a 58-year-old man, Solomon Osunobun, before an Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin for allegedly forging three confirmation of appointment letters in the state civil service.

The accused was arraigned on two counts bordering on forgery.

The prosecution told the court that Osunobun and others now at large had, between the months of May 6, 1988, and September 1995, forged the letters at the state Ministry of Transport.

The suspect and his accomplices were said to have claimed that the letters were issued by the then Commissioner of Works and Transport. The prosecution said they committed an offence “punishable under sections 516 and 467 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48, Vol. II, Law of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, now applicable in Edo State.”

Osunobun pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail by the presiding magistrate, C. A. Nwoha, in the sum of N50,000, with a surety who must be a resident in Benin.

The court, however, turned down a request by the defence counsel, Robert Imafidon, to have copies of the case file for cross examination.

The case was adjourned till August 26, 2015.

I DON’T HATE JOURNALISM, BUT BAD EGGS IN IT- OBASANJO

Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday said he is not averse to journalism but the bad eggs which inject irresponsibility into the noble profession.

He was hosting the former zonal secretary of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji to a dinner to  celebrate his 53rd birthday at his residence in Abeokuta where he said the profession was well talked about in his book, ‘My Watch’. He noted that bad journalism should not be allowed to strive, and he would not stop condemning such act in all ramifications, while continuing to celebrate good journalists.

“I remain myself and I will continue to remain myself in being blunt. I don’t hate the media, but there are some bad eggs in the profession, and this must not be allowed, and the truth must be told. However, not all journalists are bad, hence, the need to celebrate the good ones as we are all witnessing today,” Obasanjo said.

He said he would remain opposed to irresponsible journalism until the bad eggs demanding for brown envelopes while disregarding the ethics of the profession are pushed out. 

Obasanjo said journalists are expected to play meaningful roles in society, adding that he was not against genuine criticism from the media, but that the practitioners must always be sincere and committed to the ethics of the profession.

Speakers at the reception praised the celebrant and commended Obasanjo for hosting him. Kayode-Adedeji, a correspondent of Premium Times, thanked the former president for the gesture which according to him, would remain in his heart.
